The Hereford Stampede completed a remarkable 2025 campaign by securing promotion to BAFA Division 1 with a hard-fought 17–7 victory away to the Somerset Wyverns on Sunday 17th August 2025.
Played under the hot summer sun on a dry, hard surface at Victoria Park, Taunton, the promotional playoff was an all-or-nothing contest in every sense. With promotion on the line for the winner — and relegation for the loser — the stakes could not have been higher.
The Stampede arrived in Taunton full of confidence after Round One of the playoffs, where they claimed a 33–20 home victory over the Ipswich Cardinals. That win earned Hereford a place in the decisive final playoff fixture and set up a showdown with a Wyverns side fighting to retain their Division 1 status.

Leadership and Legacy on a Big Day
Adding even more significance to the occasion, the Stampede were led out by honorary gameday captain Phil “Bird” Bowers, who played his final game for the club before entering retirement and a potential future coaching role with the team.
A hugely respected figure within the squad, Bowers’ presence symbolised everything the Stampede stand for — commitment, toughness, and family. Speaking after the game, he reflected on his time with the club:
“I’ve loved every minute of being on the field for the Stampede. It’s a special club with a special group of people. The offensive line I’ve been part of is an incredible group — the bond we have is something I’ll always be proud of. My personal highlight will always be getting the chance to kit up and play alongside my son Peyton back in 2024. That’s something I’ll never forget.”

A Playoff Performance Built on Grit
In punishing conditions, the Stampede produced a performance defined by discipline and resilience. The defence was outstanding throughout, limiting Somerset to just seven points and repeatedly shutting down Wyverns drives as the heat and fatigue set in.
Offensively, Hereford managed the game intelligently, taking their opportunities and maintaining control when it mattered most. On a surface that punished mistakes, execution and composure were key — and the Stampede delivered both.
As the final whistle sounded on a 17–7 victory, it confirmed not only success on the day, but the culmination of months of preparation and belief. The win sealed promotion from BAFA Division 2 to Division 1, marking a historic step forward for the club.
Back-to-back playoff wins — first against Ipswich Cardinals and then away to Somerset Wyverns in demanding summer conditions — showcased the character and unity of the Stampede squad. It was a fitting way to end the season, and a perfect send-off for a club stalwart in Phil “Bird” Bowers.
The Stampede now look ahead to the challenge of Division 1, carrying momentum, pride, and confidence from a playoff run that will live long in club history.
